Anthony Hamilton | Mother's Day Weekend 2014

I hit the road with soul singer Anthony Hamilton for a weekend of shows, to celebrate Mother's Day. There were two stops in South Carolina, Friday and Saturday, and one on Sunday in Savannah, GA. I drove part of the way, road the tour bus part of the way, and the tail end turned out to be a road trip with Anthony, his Manager, and I.

I drove down to Charlotte, NC to meet the band members for the first leg of the tour, but arrived way too early, so I ended up having to spend the night in a hotel. Early, the next morning, I arrived to the tour bus, just in time to miss having to help load it.

North Charleston, SC

First stop, North Charleston, SC. Once we checked into the hotel, a few of us went to a local radio station where a group of women fans were waiting to meet and greet Anthony Hamilton. Before interacting with the "Sista Big Bone Choir" (per the radio personality), Anthony went on air to share some Mother's Day memories, discuss upcoming projects, and the talk about the concert.

When it was time for the meet and greet, meant it was time for lunch. A local soul food vendor catered the food. The fried chicken, and pound cake have a special place in my long term memory. I even ate a few jumbo shrimp, without taking a Benadryl - I'm a thug.

Fast forward to showtime. All I remember is this elderly caucasian lady that would not return to her seat, and she looked like she'd fight you. She stood near the side of the stage all night, singing along. She knew every song, every word. That's love.

Florence, SC

Stop number two, Florence, SC, where comedian Damn Fool, and Fantasia's brother Ricco Barrino joined the show. Another great show for the books, followed by an after party, at a really weird venue. It seemed like it was a bar mixed with a church mixed with the office space mixed with a carry out. I was so confused.

Savannah, GA

The third show for the weekend, on Mother's Day was in beautiful Savannah, GA, with Lyfe Jennings. The energy was so crazy that night. I remember the Tour Manager saying, "You guys just put on a f_ckin' show!".

You should have seen this contraption that I jury-rigged to capture some video footage while I was capturing photos. I had a roll of gaffer tape, and taped my GoPro HERO3+ camera to the lens hood of my Canon 70-200mm 2.8L. It looked crazy, but it worked.

After the show, some of us went to a local restaurant to celebrate a crew member's birthday. That turned into us hanging out in front of City Hall until 3am, telling jokes, reminiscing, and some street sangin'. Well, they sang - I wouldn't embarrass myself.

Anthony, his Manager, and I decided to stay in Savannah an extra day or two to explore. Well, honestly, we just stayed for the food. We had the opportunity to visit a local staple called "Mrs. Wilkes", a soul food restaurant. The food was simply amazing. Everything was tasty, and the staff was quite nice. After we ate, the road trip back home began. Anthony's manager drove, I was the Dj, and Anthony was asleep. Comfort food will do it every time.
