Recently, I traveled up to Philly, from DC, to do some wok with singer Tyrese. He had an in-store CD signing, to promote his new "Black Rose" album.
I packed a camera bag, and hit the highway. I arrived a few hours before the event start time, which gave me plenty of time to find good parking, eat, pee, and anything else. Upon arrival, I captured some images of the line of fans outside the store, which started at 7am that morning.
Once inside the F.Y.E. music store, I looked around at the space, to see where I'd be shooting Tyrese with his fans, and then proceeded to set my camera and 580 EX II flash. I fired a few test shots with the flash to determine the absolute best settings. Once I set the camera and 580 EX II flash, I left it alone until it was game time.
When it was time for Tyrese to arrive, I stood in place to get started.
Tyrese walked in, and the fans went crazy. He sat down at the table, and started signing CD's. The first fan approached, greeted him, and they posed for their photo.
I captured the photo, and the flash did NOT fire. I captured a second shot, and still, no flash. After about 4 attempts, and a few troubleshooting tactics, still...no flash.
Remember, the flash was working earlier - just minutes earlier. Shit happens, and you have to adjust and be ready.
I didn't panic, I just made the decision to shoot using only the existing store lighting. I removed the flash, and continued working. Someone from Tyrese's team was a bit worried about the images, since the flash wasn't firing. I told him, "Don't worry.".
I normally don't carry 2 flashes, and still will not, because my camera performs well enough in low light. However, it sucks that I have to send the flash in for repairs.
Sidebar: During the event, I coordinated a surprise pop-up, with my homegirl Chrisette Michele. Chrisette happened to be in Philly, nearby, so she and her Dad walked over to see Tyrese. She's featured on his new album, so it was a perfect moment.
